I hope you all like it, be sure to pick it up. Im pretty sure Matthew Mohammed wants these printed up for San Diego, so keep a look out for em!

I just keep drawing this Wolverine fella! Despite a terrible movie! I heard Chris Clairmont is doing a mini series thats going to tell the story of the next 75 issues of xmen he had planned to do before Jim Lee and he got in their tiff which lead to him leaving the book. My inner 12 year old is soo excited. X Men comics based on that time when they still made sense and I knew who everyone was!! YES!

TCAF!! [May. 15th, 2009|11:06 am]

[music |AM 590]

so TCAF has come and gone. What an event. I was super busy the whole weekend so I got to see very little, but what I did see was fantastic. The crowds were enthusiastic and people were opening thier wallets, which was nice to see. I met some very talented folk who I shared table space with and I drew many pictures for lots of eager enthusiasts.
On a personal note, Noway Jose was a very popular item. I very almost sold out of my first run of those. So I will be doing a new printing for upcoming conventions. The animators in comics panel I was on was a boat load of fun. There was so many faces writing down everything myself and my panel mates were saying! Inspiring!
I had a short list of people I really wanted to meet. As I was saying though the crowds were insane. I wasnt able to get away from my table!! I did at the very end of sunday, briefly met Becky Cloonan and then on the way out bumped into our visitors from across the pond Marc Ellerby and his delightful lady friend. All very nice people!
I would like to thank Chris Butcher for putting a great show along with the rest of the Beguiling staff and the volenteers who were always on hand to help. If I met you, or if you bought anything, thanks so much to you as well! What a pleasure! Cant wait for TCAF '11!

Noway Jose HD Remix cover image and sample. [May. 7th, 2009|01:39 am]

Here is the cover image to Noway Jose HD Remix. This image rocking you in the face at 80 mph pretty much tells you all you need to know about this guy. He rides with the Raptors and gets chased around by Trex's. This is because he runs the show. I hopes you likes. This should have color on it as long as I dont blow the coloring..in which case it will stay B&W.

The sweet back cover and front cover though isnt all you get in the new Noway Jose HD remix. You also get reinked interiors. Since October when I initially did this bad boy I've learned a trick or two. Heres an example of the changes your going to be seeing inside the book. If you wanna see more your going to have to come to TCAF and buy the mini. HAZAH!
More news! The Toronto Comics Arts Festival is this weekend! I want you to come and visit me. Heres all the info you need. http://www.torontocomics.com/tcaf/

Even more news! In the build up to TCAF, I had a Q&A run in the Globe and Mail! Learn more about me here.. http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/afterword/archive/tags/Brian+Evinou/default.aspx

Also, somehow someone thought it would be a good idea to give me a forum to speak my mind with more respected and talented artists than myself! If you want to see me heave and bluster come by and watch the Animators in comics panel on Sunday at 2.30 to 3 in Learning room 1 @ TCAF! Faith Erin Hicks is on the panel with me!! Heres a full list of the events... http://comics212.net/2009/05/06/tcaf-programming-schedule/#more-2606

Hopefully I will get one more post on here before the big event. But if not please do come by! I will be doing free sketches all weekend, I'll have Jim and Jenn pages on me to show off! Noway Jose minis and Lucy Legacy books and stickers to pawn off. I know theres more shows in the summer. But from the bottom of my heart this is my fav show. You dont want to miss it.

This drawing was a blast. THe idea of the drawing is that you learn a lot about Jose just from this pic. Like now we know he has hung out with robots in the past, encountered the Empire. Its all there. I love world builder pics. For a comic thin on dialouge like Noway, I hope it adds some layers and richness to his story
This drawing will be the back cover for the mini, it will prolly stay in b&w, maybe tonals. I will have the cover for you sometime before the big event!
Hopes you all likes, remember TCAF is just around the corner, be there! http://www.torontocomics.com/tcaf/index.html

Destroyer!! [Apr. 14th, 2009|07:46 pm]

[music |Joel Plaskett- Three]

I went into the comic shop and bought my first marvel title in months. It was Destroyer, by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. The premise of the book is that Destroyer's career has been on going since the forties and we're seeing him at the end of his days and how he wraps it all up. Its exciting for me to get Kirkman and Walker together again, the original team on my fav superhero book Invincible. More than that though the book is a super violent hoot, and beautifully executed. Even with the brain matter splattering the page every where it still retains the fun feel that Kirkman and Walker first showed us with Invincible, I recomend it!
here is a 7 page preview http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=2307&disp=table
I went a lil over board with the ink splotches but it felt a lil bare before so what can you do!

Draw pictures everyday kids!

Wolverine Appreciation month. [Apr. 11th, 2009|12:41 pm]

[mood | contemplative]
[music |Joel Plaskett- Three]

So as I've mentioned on here before, The uncanney X-Men was my comic growing up. I started during the Fall of the Mutants, round issue 220. My favorite X-man like every other snot nosed kid was the Old Canucklehead, Wolverine, Logan, Weapon mutha F#$king X.
Anyways, when working on Jim and Jenn, I always start the day with little warmup doodles. These are some of the fruit of those early morning labors. I tell ya, that sewer one was not turning out. Theres a whole lower body under that water that looks like ass. Hence the sewer! Spooky setting for Wolverine? NO! Convienent way to cover up short comings in art! YES!
Time for bad news. I failed at Jim and Jenn. Its going to be done for TCAF, sadly it wont be printed. Financial coupled with scheduling problems have led me to push it back. Fear not though. I will be having a release party for when I have it printed early summer and it will definitly be available at The Hobbystar con in August SPX in Sept and Excellent comic stores around Toronto. I'm Sorry to have to report this, no one is more disapointed than me. The bright side though is that Im now planning on having tonals in the book and I will get to rejig the begining a bit to jazz up the book even more. For the TCAF attendees, I will have a very special small print run of Noway Jose available with an exciting amazing cover. So hopefully that will help you forgive me untill Jim and Jenn's explosive release! Sexy..

Hope you all like these drawings!

So this is one of my favorite characters from Lost, the popular television program, you might of heard of it. John Locke!!! I dont know what took me so long to get on board with this show. It is pretty rad. Im going to watch the finale of season 2 tonight and I cant wait. I'll definitly be up to date in time for the last season. Can it fill the hole BSG is going to leave in my heart in two weeks? We'll find out.

Also, I saw Watchmen yesterday afternoon. My capsule review, pretty good. Its definitly a much better translation than I thought possible. Theres a lot of layers of the book missing and the sense of parody and reconstruction of the comics genre. But the crux of the story is there. It was fun to see a lot of the big moments on the big screen. So cup slightly over half full. Im very relieved its not terrible though. I was expecting 300 the sequal.

Theres a movie coming out on friday! Get this outta the way right off. Im pretty sure its going to stink. I hope it doesnt. This is a feeling I have though. Be aware.
Watchmen is definitly one of my fav books. Im doing a homage to it actually in Jim and Jenn using the 9 panel format that Dave Gibbons rocked in those pages. I saw Gibbons speak in Dec at a book store here in Toronto. It was really inspiring and got me thinking a lot about preperation and design. Anyways. I had already started Jim and Jenn at this point but in the future theres a few things I gleaned from his talk that I hope to use in future projects.
Hope you all like the drawing. Jim and Jenn is still on pace. I missed the sign up for Mocca. I suck. If anyone wants to share thier table with me I would be pleased to pay!!

The book is definitly on pace to be finished for TCAF so hopefully you'll be seeing these and me in person there!

Man, did you guys hear that a certain game is coming out next week? I love the Street Fighter. Ken is definitly my favorite world warrior. Im looking forward to kicking some of my friends ass' on this bad boy come next week.

So Im working pretty hard right now. I have roughly two months to finish Jim and Jenn before it goes to the printers. I have just enough time. Im doing a page a day and my focus is pretty singular right now. Im expecting to pick up the pace when I get to the ultra exciting finale. Also during subway and streetcar transit Ive been working on some cover and font concepts. Hopefully I'll have time to do a couple nice versions of some of the better ones and share them with you. I'd love to hear what you guys think.
This is of course all to have this book done for TCAF, where I'll be a guest alongside some of my favorite comic creators. Check out the stacked guestlist! http://www.torontocomics.com/tcaf/guests.html

Welcome back BSG! Who else watched the premiere of season 4.5 this weekend. Man that was some crazy TV. Here is Galactica's premiere fighter pilot Kara Thrace, you gotta love her.
While getting amped up watching the BSG I was thinking how few good scifi comics there are out there. I ended up jotting some ideas down for a comic and now Im thinking about it all the time. Whats sucks about comics though is they take so long, Ive already decided how Im going to be spending the next year and a half, with finishing Jim and Jenn and moving onto my next project. They take so long you always end up having a back log of other wicked ideas to get too. I guess thats the appeal of the 24 hour comics challenges, its the one time a year you get to spew out an entire project out of your mind in one day {most of the time, see jim and jenn and Lucy Legacy}.

Check it out. Its Batman from Batman year 100! I really love this design. Paul Pope for me, can do no wrong. So anyhow. Not much other than that to say. Still working on this here Jim and Jenn comic. Its getting there. By getting there I mean a third of the way in. The change to 2009 has really made me confront the reality of how little time I have left if I want to have this thing out for con season. It will be done. Its gotta be. Also the internet is the devil when it comes to avoiding work. Im very weak.

heres the color version too. I lifted the palette from the cover of the Batman year 100 trade.

I'll be all over north america this con season pushing my new book Jim and Jenn. I hope you all had a great new year and all the best in 09!
Thanks for watching.

So heres my Chrsitmas card to you my dear readers, this ones for you! So today has been a great day, spent with family and friends. I hope yours was as good as mine! Two days ago we had our tenth annual festivus party, this year in the feats of strength I managed to make it into the finals against 9 time champion Gary Patrick. I thought I was doing well, I had him slightly over and had turned my shoulder, Gary looked at me and said, "are you ready?" Next thing I knew the table was over and we had a ten time festivus champion.... Today when sketching I wondered how the feats would go with my characters. Ray got a rough first round draw...prolly karma.
Merry Christmas and happy festivus everyone!

One of the best chapters in the entire ASOIAF series to me is this one towards the end of ASOS. I hope you like the drawing...I still got more of these in me. I cant believe its been two months since my Sandor pic! Theres still at least a Brienne, Jaime and Tyrion in the future for sure..

Heres that Jayne dude from Firefly. Man I love the Whedon. I wish this show got more time cause it was pretty tight. THe film was definitly the best scifi film in 2005 {I think thats when it came out} and Im not sure if theres been any films that would match it since. If you can think of any that I might of missed let me know, as I love the sci fi. Speaking of I watched Star ship troopers 3 the other day. Its hilarious.
Anyways, look for more pinups from me in the coming weeks, as you aint seeing no Jim and Jenn. Which by the way continues to chug along. I keep adding scenes. Im a masochist.
Also heres part one of a Battlestar Galatica two parter auto bile comic that costars the powers of whedon. I did this first part prolly in april or soemthing..I may not ever finish this as the second part isnt as topical as it would of been when I did the first part...it was all about how long the wait between season 4.1 and 4.2 was to be..ironically not as long as the wait for the second part of this comic...FOREVER!!

Kaneda, reaction to Steven Grant [Dec. 5th, 2008|03:37 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Location |Chained to my desk]
[mood | optimistic]
[music |The Super Friendz]

So if your not aware yet and you pay any attention to the comics media you soon will be...

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=19027

Steven Grant in his Permenant Damage article this week serves up his year in review 2008. Dreary. His main thrust is a lack of original ideas, that although we may of seen this year the best superman story ever, its still just a super man story. I suggest you read it, its a good article, very polarizing.
My thoughts on the article, it seems to be very DC Marvel centric. Comics may not be in a golden age but compared to any time before other than the kirby glory years or the two years that saw watchmen and dark night come out we're doing pretty freaking good. We have to remember when slogging through the newest civil war or final crisis that despite the lows of the popular superhero titles we're still in the primes of careers of some of the most exciting comics talents ever. Bryan Lee O Malley, Paul Pope, James Jean, Becky Cloonan, Faith Erin Hocks are all names that are in varying degrees of becoming household. World builders all of them. Mentioning those five is just the top of the top, any indie comics show or zine show will introduce you to any number of exciting new artist whose last ambition is to write spiderman for the rest of thier lives{not that theres anything wrong with that}.
If thats not enough new and exciting for you, look to the web. Achewood, Perry Bible, Katie Beaton, Dinosaur comics, Transmission X, Scary go round, XKCD octopus pie..the list goes on and on.
Im onside with steven Grant when I go into the beguiling and I have to fight through eighteen tie in issues of secret invasion to find the newest invincible but saying that shows that with all the bad theres hope. I feel good about comics. So should you.

Having said all of that maybe I should of expanded those few years that saw Watchmen and dark knight come out to include the better part of the eighties which is how long it took to finish Akira. Katsuhiro Otomo finished two full length stories before heading into animation, Domu and Akira. Both deal with psychic powers and both are huge influences for me as will be seen in my newest book. Here is of course the protaginist of Akira, Kaneda.
Keep on keeping on Comics!
